LT Tyrell (Piper) is an L.A. cop and bar owner, and he and his wife Rose (Pacula) are thinking of packing it all up and retiring to Brazil. A guy named Ray (Wong) is the neighborhood baddie, who not only sends out his goons to get protection money from the local businesses, he also stages underground Punchfights. He also has a tragic history with Tyrell.

When the Tyrell's adopted son Gabriel (Barry) comes back from a Special Ops mission, he seems disturbed. The seemingly-ubiquitous Ray forces Gabriel to Punchfight for him, threatening that for every fighter Gabriel beats, that's one member of the Tyrell family he'll leave alone. Even Kate (Park), Tyrell's former partner, is powerless to stop all this feuding and brawling. Will it all be just a matter of HONOR?


Well, it's better than director David Worth's previous effort American Tigers (1996), but that's not saying much. Honor is humorless and dour; the problem with these latter-day Punchfighters is that by this point in time, viewers have seen this type of thing many, many times before. 

By the time the 2000's rolled around, makers of Punchfighters could not just retread the same old ground. They either had to bring something new to the table, or at least make it fun. Shootfighter (1993) had colorful characters that were clearly delineated, such as Boa and Mongoose. Fist Fighter (1989) had memorable characters such as Punchy. Warrior of Justice (1995) is just a spasm of pure insanity dreamt up by the fevered mind of Jorgo Ognenovski. Honor has none of these sorts of attributes. By 2006, what Honor was doing was pretty well-worn stuff.


Not that it's all bad, of course. Thankfully, the filmmakers had the good sense to make it 80 minutes. That was a blessing. Something like Honor should be 80 minutes. It's perfect for that sort of running time, and other makers of these sorts of things should "Honor" the viewers' time like this. So points go to them for that. Plus, it's always nice to see one of our heroes, Roddy Piper.


He gives one of his more serious dramatic performances that we've seen to date. The problem with the Tyrell character is that a nice guy like him isn't going to start busting heads right away. He has a long fuse, which means we have to wait quite a while until we see Roddy unleashed. 

Some people might not like that. However, viewers won't fail to miss the They Live graffiti on the wall, as it's shown twice, rather clearly. And Jason Barry as Gabriel was also rather brooding as the estranged son. Russell Wong stands out as the evil baddie that the audience can boo and hiss at.


The directorial career of David Worth is certainly a mixed bag. While we enjoyed Lady Dragon (1992) and Lady Dragon 2 (1993), and Chain of Command (1994), not to mention True Vengeance (1997), we have mixed feelings about Air Strike (2004). We weren't crazy about Soldier's Revenge (1986) and the aforementioned American Tigers is pretty awful. We've been on the record for years about how we think Kickboxer (1989) is overrated. Honor falls into the mid-range/end of the Worth spectrum. It's not entirely "Worth"-less but it definitely could have used some color or pizazz of some sort.

So, for the Piper factor and the reasonable running time, Honor may be 'worth' checking out for Punchfighting fans. But keep your expectations tamped.

The Circuit III: The Street Monk (2006)

"Mission Control: We've Found Mr. Longstreet." - Helicopter Pilot

After Circuiting it up over the past two films, our old pal Dirk Longstreet (Gruner) has renounced fighting and becomes a surfer. He lives in a van down by the ocean and just wants to be left alone to hang ten to his heart's content. Things change for Longstreet when he rescues a young girl named Cherrie Wendover (Rose) from a bunch of thugs. The baddies were after her because she knows the truth about Octavio Ventura (Carter), a man who stages illegal Punchfights to the death at a strip club called the Playpen.




When Cherrie gets kidnapped, Ventura forces Longstreet to come out of retirement in order to win her freedom. But he has to fight the current champion, Stuart "Spider" Webb (Lew), among others. Meanwhile, both Editor Bill (Merhi) and Detective Sykes (Avedon) want to figure out what's going on. Will this be the FINAL FLIGHT - or is it FIGHT - for THE STREET MONK, Dirk Longstreet?

Okay, we know that Dirk Longstreet is an awesome name, but we established that a long time ago. At this point, the whole "Circuit" thing is starting to wear a bit thin. It has an even cheaper look to it than the other installments, which wouldn't be such a bad thing in itself if the writing wasn't so monosyllabic, monotonous, and moronic. Yes, the whole thing is very, very dumb. While you shouldn't run to the Circuit series expecting intelligence, it still comes off as somehow disappointingly stupid.


There are only a couple moments when the dumbness becomes funny or entertaining, such as when one of the baddies inexplicably hires a group of surfers to beat up Dirk Longstreet. Normally not known for their violent tendencies, perhaps the choice of paying a gaggle of extra-chill California surfer dudes to assault Longstreet was the wrong move. Longstreet dispatches with them quickly by beating them up extra-stupidly with his surfboard. Oh dear.


Other funny moments occur when fights break with little or no pretext. A lot of these fights have, let's just say, choreography issues. We don't mean to nitpick, because it's probably hard to make a movie like this, but come on. A little more professionalism would have gone a long way.


In between all this, there are many scenes of Longstreet having his own Endless Summer (AKA endless surfing). While that slows things down considerably, the real problem is that Longstreet isn't that likable a character, at least for 90 percent-plus of the movie. He's kind of a jerk to Cherrie for no reason that we can see. Having likable characters is key, and The Circuit III does not deliver them. Avedon and Merhi don't add much to the mix, and James Lew doesn't say anything. This ship is sinking fast.


The many scenes at The Playpen strip club got us thinking. If men go to strip clubs to see naked women, would they be happy or disappointed to see a bunch of half-naked men grappling with each other? Would this be a net benefit for the strip club patron, or an unpleasant surprise? Nevertheless, all the fights at this one location, with its particularly annoying announcer, got repetitive fast. It's all very reminiscent, unfortunately, of Las Vegas Warrior (2002). That's probably the film that's the closest comparison to Circuit III.


While the film opens up with a truly impressive location, the top of some sort of mountain, the scenes that take place up there are face-palmingly dumb. Longstreet is at the top of the mountain wearing a Karate gi, and guys just show up there and begin fighting him in a very silly manner. It goes on for a while.


While The Circuit III was never released in America - and it is unfair that Merhi would foist this muck on the rest of the world - it can now be seen on Merhi's YouTube channel. While it all caps off with a catchy song, performed live by Cristina Rose, perhaps the best thing about the whole experience is its end credits. It's so filled with spelling and other errors, it's more entertaining than the movie itself.


However, we would only recommend this to those who have seen the other two Circuit films and are Circuit completists and need to see it out of some kind of OCD-like compulsion. Assuming you don't have this kind of medical issue, we can safely say to skip this one.

Tae-Su (Jung), Wang-Jae (Ahn), Pil-Ho (Lee), Dong-Hwan (Jeong) and Seok-Hwan (Director Ryoo) were close-knit high school buddies in the late 80’s. They loved scrapping and fighting, but it was a much more innocent time. After the mysterious death of Wang-Jae, Tae-Su returns to his small South Korean hometown to attend the funeral. But suspicions arise, and Tae-Su, who is now a hard-nosed cop, stays in town to conduct his own personal investigation into the death of his friend. 

He teams up with Seok-Hwan and together they tear up the town and even revert back to their old pugilistic ways. When it turns out the aggressor in all this is their old pal Pil-Ho, who grew up to be a remorseless psychopath, and who has become a successful land developer because of his corrupt and ruthless ways, it sets the stage for an epic battle for the ages. Will the hometown of these old friends become the ultimate CITY OF VIOLENCE? Find out today!

The City of Violence is a highly entertaining movie, overflowing with dynamism, energy, color and visual appeal. The cinematic flourishes on a visual level are the icing on the cake to a story about loyalty, brotherhood, betrayal and nostalgia. Not to mention remembrance and tragedy. And of course fighting. It is extremely well-shot, well-lit, and well-directed, and director Ryoo employs all manner of tactics to delight the eye of the viewer and keep them invested. 

What with its fast pace, you don’t really get a chance to become un-invested. Thanks to indicators like this movie, South Korea has become a hotbed of film talent in recent years. The City of Violence is a great example of what Korean filmmakers have to offer, and we definitely recommend it.

There are plenty of memorable moments, but from an action standpoint, the scene in the shopping district with its references to The Warriors (1979), as well as the Shaw Brothers-inspired climax, will more than satisfy action cravings. The scenes set in the 80’s also stand out, with expertly-done hair and clothes, as well as music - note the song by Namee, “Eternal Friendship”. Could there be some irony there? Whoever did the wardrobe for the movie should also be very proud, as characters wear very interesting clothing, which definitely matches the movie’s overall colorful nature. Top the movie off with some nice humorous bits, and you have a winner.

Definitely try to get a hold of the Dragon Dynasty 2-DVD set of this movie. They always do good work and they’ve chosen another gem for their roster of releases. We think it’s definitely worth adding to your collection.

Starring: Lori Heuring, Clayne Crawford, Patrick Bergin













False Prophets A.K.A. "Gas Station Jesus" is an interesting film. Lori Heuring stars as Maggie. She is a waitress who unexpectedly gets pregnant. She goes to the hospital decides to have an abortion in two weeks. A Christian cult finds out about this and tries to stop her. The cult find her and at first put up a phony adoption to trick her, but she finds out, and now she's on the run. She then meets Manny (Antonio David Lyons) who is a gas station worker. Manny has a special gift which helps her in a spiritual way.

The movie is well-acted and directed. It's slow-paced, but the plot is different enough so you won't fall asleep. In the end: False Prophets is a hidden gem that should be discovered instead of being buried forever.

The Darwin Awards (2006)

Starring: Winona Ryder, Joseph Fiennes, Juilette Lewis, Chris Penn, and David Arquette










The Darwin Awards is a funny dark comedy.

Michael Burrows (Fiennes) is obsessed with "The Darwin Awards" which is about people who kill themselves in the stupidest way possible. After he's fired from his detective job, he goes on a quest with Siri (Ryder) to figure why this happens.



Fiennes and Ryder have decent chemistry and the all-star cameos are fun to watch. Arquette's bit is interesting about the guy who puts a rocket on his car. It's also nice to see one of Penn's last performances. The ending involving Metallica was a little lame though. They don't need to act.




Once again, it's odd that such a big film goes straight-to-video, but it's better than the movie staying on some shelf somewhere collecting dust.

Overall, The Darwin Awards is worth seeing for the acting and the crazy stunts.

Played (2006)

Starring: Val Kilmer, Vinnie Jones, Gabriel Byrne, Bruno Kirby, Anthony LaPaglia and Mick Rossi










Played was a decent crime thriller despite its budget shortcomings.

Ray (Rossi) is a small-time thief who is framed for a crime he didn't commit. When he gets out of jail, he falls back into the same life.

The budget for this movie was $338,000, so I understand why it was shot on video instead of film. I was worried about that because the usual Lionsgate (shot on video) output is usually terrible ("Green River Killer", "Heebie Jeebies"). It actually looks good in most scenes.

Mick Rossi does a fine job as Ray. But the big name stars are only in this for maybe five minutes each. Kilmer does his usual professional work. His dialogue was improvised and it shows. ("You're not gonna Taco, Ray.") Jones plays a good bad guy. Byrne appears stiff and looks like he wants to be anywhere else. I also noticed that almost all the actors are on the phone. It's pretty cheap just to shoot actors talking on a phone.


Overall, Played was a satisfactory crime flick, that's a good second or third choice at the video store.

The Contract (2006)

Starring: Morgan Freeman and John Cusack











The Contract was a pretty good thriller.

Frank Carden (Freeman) is a hitman about to do another job when he is sidetracked by a car accident. His cover is blown and the authorities are bringing him to Washington. But Carden escapes into the woods and meets Ray Keene (Cusack) and his son. With the cops and other hitmen after them, they have to escape.




Freeman and Cusack put in their usual professionalism. It's fun to see Freeman as the bad guy. Cusack gets to kill a few people too. The action scenes are well-shot and the scenery in Bulgaria looks beautiful.



The only thing that's odd is why two top-drawer actors would be drawn to a project fit for Eric Roberts or Michael Pare, but it works.

The Contract is one of the biggest DTV movies of the year and it's definitely worth seeing. It's a good couch-potato flick.

Yo-Yo Girl Cop is a fun flick!

A rebellious teenager (Matsuura) is recruited to go undercover in a private school to weed out potential terrorists. She needs to do this to save her mom. When she gets to the school, she realizes she's in too deep. There's one more piece of crucial piece of info: She's armed with a deadly steel yo-yo!




It's a good idea and the opening sequence is slick, but the movie lags in the second half. It makes up for it in the climax though. Matsuura puts in an entertaining performance.

Yo-Yo Girl Cop is worth seeing for the cool yo-yo action and Matsuura's performance.

The Hawk Is Dying is a low-key gem.

George Gattling (Giamatti) has a boring life as an auto upholsterer. His hobby is training hawks. But most of his hawks die of starvation. When he finds another one, his goal is to not make it starve and get the respect of his family.



As usual, Giamatti puts in a great performance as George. You feel for his character instantly. You want him to succeed. Williams also does a good job as George's love interest. I can see why this movie was dumped onto DVD shelves. The movie has no commercial appeal. I think it's better that way. Perhaps people can discover this movie themselves.

The Hawk Is Dying is definitely worth watching.

The Breed (2006)

The Breed is an okay horror-thriller.

Nicki (Rodriguez) and her friends go to a secluded house on an island to party before college exams. In the beginning it's all fun and drinking, but then rabid killer dogs come after them. Can they escape?



What's bad about the movie is that you don't feel for any of the characters. Harper's role is the token black guy. All he wants to do is drink even after the dogs have attacked. The acting is decent though. Rodriguez puts in a good performance and she does well with the action scenes. Manning was better in Hustle & Flow (2005) and Dandelion (2004). The dog special effects work sometimes, but story-wise, they come out of nowhere and there's no end to them.

The movie has been collecting dust and cobwebs for awhile now. It was slated for a theatrical release, but it's better off on video.

Walking Tall: The Payback (2006)

Remember when Sorbo walked tall? Here's the proof.

Walking Tall: The Payback is a very entertaining action flick.

Nick Prescott (Sorbo) comes to clean up the violence and corruption infested town his family lives in after his dad dies in an "accident". It's time to break out the walkin' stick!



Kevin Sorbo does a really good job as the hero. The stunts and action scenes are well-filmed and edited. A.J. Buckley is the villian you want dead in the first scene you see him. The only problem is that the middle lags a bit and that's not a big deal. I wonder how they're going to top this one when the Walking Tall 3 comes out later this year.

Walking Tall: The Payback is way better than the last 4 Seagal flicks, and I definitely recommend it.

Starring: Clifton Collins Jr. and Brittany Daniel









Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders could've been so much better.

Dr. Samantha Stone (Daniel) gets a case that involves accused murderer Kennenth Bianchi (Collins Jr.) She gets into his head, and eventually he does the same to her.


The main problem with the film is that there too many camera and sound tricks. It's very distracting and headache-inducing. The camera goes around in circles every two seconds.



What's good about this film is the performances. Clifton Collins Jr. is great as Kenneth. If you watch his other performances in 187 (1997) or Mindhunters (2004), you can see the immense talent he has. Brittany Daniel does a decent job. Yes, she takes off her clothes, but she has acting ability. In the end: This movie is a misfire, but thankfully it does boast two good main performances, without that, it would have been a disaster.

Irresistible (2006)

Irresistible is a poorly thought-out film. Susan Sarandon plays Sophie, who is an artist. She thinks her husband is having an affair with his secretary. When she thinks this, nobody believes her. This is basically "Fatal Attraction" again.



The problem with the film is that there is no suspense at all. It shoots itself in the foot because of the predictability of the characters. The viewers will know nothing will happen to her. Sam Neill is good as usual, but he doesn't do much.



In the trivia section of IMDb it says that she worked with the director for six months on the script to meet her specifications. I guess Susan supports movies with zero tension, no character development, and no sense of humor in the role. That means everybody else gets the short end of the stick. In the end: If you want a good Susan Sarandon film White Palace (1990) or Light Sleeper (1992) are better choices.

Flight Of Fury (2006)

Starring: Steven Seagal










He's Back! Barely two months after Attack Force (2006)!

 The plot, which is a ripoff of the Michael Dudikoff movie Black Thunder (1998) by the way ... is about "John Sands" (Mr. Large and In Charge, which officially makes Seagal, the Garfield of the action movie world) who has to stop a renegade pilot from giving a powerful jet plane to "Romanian Russians" (?).



The good news is that this is a step up from Attack Force, which is a good thing, and it looks like Seagal was trying. The bad news is that he's still fat, and using ADR voice-overs. This movie is chock, and I mean chock full of stock footage from other movies like Stealth Fighter (1999) and Black Thunder. The "script" even uses the same names. Every aerial shot is mismatched.

There's some good action and explosions toward the end, and Seagal's one liner is "Hell Yeah" which is funny. My life is complete.

Journey To The End Of The Night (2006)

Starring: Brendan Fraser, Mos Def, Alice Braga, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Scott Glenn










Journey To The End Of The Night is a disappointment.

The plot: Paul (Fraser) is a pimp who lives in Brazil with his father Russo (Glenn). They have a drug deal planned. Their mule suddenly dies, and, desperate, Russo asks dishwasher Wemba (Def) to replace him. It doesn't go exactly as planned....

The whole movie feels rushed. Something must have been cut out because it feels disjointed. There's no way this movie is 85 minutes long. If it was 2 hours it would've been better. The actors are good however. Def impresses again with a good performance. Fraser goes a little over the top but it works for his character. Glenn is always worth watching.





If you like the actors, JTTEOTN is worth seeing, but overall it's a minor disappointment.

Wilderness (2006)

Wilderness is a tight and scary film.

A group of teenage offenders are sent to a forest to rehabilitate after the death of another inmate. But someone and something is after them, killing them one by one. Can they escape?


The movie is loaded with gore and suspense. Sean Pertwee is his usual professional self and the special effects are pretty well-done. It's from The director of the underrated Deathwatch (2002), so you know it's going to be nothing less than good. The only drawback is the jarring use of video during the first killing. But that's a minor problem. I also like that all the characters are despicable and there's really no hero. The climax is very entertaining and bloody.



Wilderness is another winner from Michael J. Bassett. I highly recommend it.

Incubus (2006)

Starring: Tara Reid, Alice O'Connell, and Akemnji Ndifornyen











"Incubus" has been on the shelf for a while. Filmed in late 2004, it collected dust for a year and half and then premiered on AOL. It finally comes to DVD this February. It wasn't worth the wait.

Jay (Reid) and her group of friends are stranded in a building where they realize that someone or something is terrorizing them by going into their dreams. Can they stop the madness?

Wow, this is one badly acted movie. The token black guy (Ndifornyen) was the worst. His line readings were awful. It appears that O'Connell can be seen reading the cue cards - with no emotion whatsoever. I'll save the worst for last: Reid has been better (Silent Partner for example) but she doesn't show talent here. Just a blank expression. Her screams are even miscued and lifeless.



The only saving grace was the climax\ending. It had some suspense and gore and was put together well. If only the whole movie was like that. This Incubus gives Esperanto a bad name...and surely Mr. Shatner is none too pleased.

Undisputed II: Last Man Standing (2006)

Starring: Michael Jai White, Scott Adkins, and Ben Cross









Undisputed II is an improvement over the original. It has more bone-crunching fights.

Heavy-weight boxing champion George "The Iceman" Chambers (White) is once again thrown in prison after being framed. But the twist is that he's in a Russian jail chock full of stereotypes. The only way to live.....is to fight the reigning champion Boyka (Adkins).



It's a simple plot, but with a lot of setup towards the big fight. There are actually two fights between them though. All the fights are well-choreographed and exciting.

White is a good replacement for Ving Rhames from the first. Adkins plays his bad guy to the hilt. You root for him to get knocked out every second. Ben Cross is on hand as another prisoner. He puts in a good performance also.



The only weak point is the ending. It's too nice. I understand why they did that, but some of the grittiness is lost.

Overall, Undisputed II is worth seeing for the fights and White's performance.

I'll repeat this again: I like Seagal. But he's not trying anymore. You got the photoshopped head on the covers, retitles every two seconds, and the big man once again shows he's not going to World Gym. I have a Steven Seagal DTV addiction. I need to go to S.S.A. {Steven Seagal Anonymous}.

This time around: Jack Foster (You know the guy I'm talking about) is an ex-cop on a mission to save his daughter from terrorists. Same old, same old.

When Steve was making films with Warner Bros. in the mid 80's-90's, all of his films were professionally made. Now since 2001-present day, his films look terrible. They are shot in Romania or Bucharest or some foreign country with tax breaks. The green screen during the chase scene is horrendous. On the plus side it looks like Seagal laid low on the stunt doubles this time around, and the climax is unintentionally funny.

It's better than Attack Force (2006) but not as good as his DTV peak Belly Of The Beast (2003)

One more thing: You can make some lame jokes as his expense with the title: He's a "Shadow" of his former self, or he casts a big "Shadow". Your choice.

UKM: Ultimate Killing Machine is a boring and highly unthrilling movie.

5 reject teenagers are recruited by the government to test a new drug that makes supersoldiers, run by Major Blevins (Madsen). Unfortunately, one other test subject went insane and now is on the loose...

The whole movie was shot in a building to cut down costs. Apparently, Madsen is expensive. The cast, besides him, is awful. No line of dialogue is timed right, and everybody just yells. There's no motivation or personality for any of the characters. The best part of the movie is the beginning. But after that, it all goes downhill quickly. Madsen's there for a paycheck, but how much could it be?
